Description

CENTRO RURAL DE ARTE is a non-profit civil association that aims to generate artistic projects in relation to rural environments. It organizes residencies, workshops, and joint projects with other organizations.
According to the characteristics of each project, they approach a particular way to record and spread the activities. They pay attention to the circulation of contents and experiences of each work. The work in each of its formats (residencies, workshops, etc) is based on the construction of interdisciplinary operative platforms (artists, local people, workers from different areas), including local and foreign creators in order to foster open views to a certain socio-geographic area.
The general objective of CENTRO RURAL DE ARTE is the search of possible territories to develop contemporary art, approaching experiences from a multiplicity of languages, where limits between creative processes and products, and art producers vs. art receptors can be put at stake.

Location

Los Alerces National Park is a protected area of 263,000 hectares next to Cordillera de los Andes, in Chubut, Argentina. It was created in 1937 in order to protect lahuán or alerce woods (larch), typical trees of the Patagonia-Andes region.
Villa Futalaufquen, a place developed by the National Parks Goverment, is settled there. It counts on several houses, a school, state buildings, gardens and services. It is the only urbanization within the area with 50 houses and 200 people, mostly employed at the Park. There are also military staff, and teachers. The Villa was created between the late 40's and early 50's.
The first dwellers in the region came 3,000 years ago and settled in the valley of Desaguadero river. They were hunter-gatherers, descendents of Tehuelches and Araucanas people, who were forced to modified their lives when the Spanish conquerors arrived.
Due to the so called "Campaña al Desierto" (1879-1883. Desert Campaign)- the genocide of the indigenous people in Argentina by General Roca- they were all desarticulated.
Currently, mapuche families live around the National Park.
When the Park was created in 1937 there were over a hundred families who were allowed to remain in the region (among them: Argentine, Chileans, Europeans and some indigenous people).
